France "Fleur de Lis" Flag
The fleur-de-lis (or "fleur-de-lys"; plural: fleurs-de-lis) is a stylised design of a lily flower much used in heraldry, where it is particularly associated with the French monarchy. The fleur-de-lis has also been used by various Scouting organisations worldwide as part of their logo.
The fleur-de-lis remains an unofficial symbol of France (along with the bees and the Napoleonic eagle), but has not been used as an official symbol by the various French republics. The archaic variant spelling fleur-de-luce has been interpreted as meaning "flower of light" (from Latin lux, lucem = "light".) In religious symbolism the fleur-de-lis is a symbol for the Holy Trinity symbolising the Resurrection and the Assumption. The lily is also often used in the Annunciation.
The phrase is literally translated from French as the "flower of the lily", a stylised version of the species Iris pseudacorus. Decorative ornaments that resemble the fleur-de-lis have appeared in the artwork from the earliest civilisations.

It is an essential graphic theme found on Egyptian bas-reliefs, Mesopotamian cylinders, Mycenaean potteries, Sassanid textiles, Gaulish coins, Mameluk coins, Indonesian clothes, Japanese emblems and Dogon totems. The many writers who have discussed the topic agree that it has little to do graphically with the lily, but disagree on whether it derives from the iris, the broom, the lotus or the furze, or whether it represents a trident, an arrowhead, a double axe, or a dove or a pigeon. It is in our opinion a problem of little importance. The essential point is that it is a very stylised figure, probably a flower, that has been used as an ornament or an emblem by almost all civilisations of the old and new worlds.
